If death is natural why does it feel so wrong?

Here is a modified something that I posted back in 2017, before I began blogging.

One of the most convincing evidences of the truth of the gospel is the fact that we all feel that death is something that ought not happen. Every other aspect of our natural being makes sense: we hunger, there is natural food and we are nourished by it; we have a drive for sex, there is a mate to fulfil that and it results in multiplication of humankind; we fear a danger, and adrenalin provides energy for battle or escape; we have creative ambition and can create. But then comes death. It makes no sense. We want to go on… but the fact of death thwarts us.

God has created us with a sense of eternity in our hearts. Death feels wrong because it is wrong. The fact that all around us and within us death exists is not God’s fault, it is ours – ours because of sin. Long ago we chose, and every day we choose, sin over God. Death is not what God our Creator intended. “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts….” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Tozer comments…

“We take it for granted and we are not surprised at all about the eternal nature of God but the greater wonder is that God has seen fit to put His own everlastingness within the hearts of men and women….
I believe that this is the truth about our troubles and our problems: We are disturbed because God has put everlastingness in our hearts. He has put a longing for immortality in our beings. He has put something within men and women that demands God and heaven—and yet we are too blind and sinful to find Him or even to look for Him!…
Men and women need to be told plainly, and again and again, why they are disturbed and why they are upset. They need to be told why they are lost and that if they will not repent they will certainly perish. Doctors and counselors will tell troubled men and women that their problems are psychological, but it is something deeper within the human being that troubles and upsets—it is the longing after eternity.” – A.W. Tozer, Christ the Eternal Son, pp. 52-54

The wages of sin is death,” (Rom. 6 :23a) But the gospel tells us there is a way back to eternality. There is an answer to that inner longing, and that answer is Christ! “…the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23b).

May the Lord, help all who read this see past the commotion and chaos of this world and listen to that longing within. May they all reach out and grasp Christ, our only hope of salvation and the gift of eternal life.

God has created within us all the above mentioned felt needs and more. He has placed within His creation, or has within Himself, all the means necessary to satisfy each one of them. He has also created within us a sense of eternity in our hearts.

Observes Solomon,

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts….” (Eccl. 3:11)

Death feels wrong because it is wrong. Death is not what our Creator intended.

Tozer speaks further on this…

This world is filled with so much commotion, distraction, activity, and noise! The madness of the material fills and busies our senses till that longing for eternity is drowned out — and the devil dances!

Covid-19 has forced us to come apart from this, forced us to sit in silence and contemplate that nagging, loving, still, small Voice which is His loving call. We are made for Him, and we are eternal. The question is how and where one choses to experience one’s eternality!

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts….” (Eccl. 3:11)

Believe on Christ, allow Him to rule in your heart and you will see: His perfect love casts out all fears, death is a threat no more. Death is swallowed up by Christ’s Victory. Eternal LIFE becomes your destiny!

Assurance vs Insurance

I’ve always puzzled over why some companies were called insurance companies while others were called assurance companies. So, I investigated…

Insurance provides financial coverage for unforeseen circumstances surrounding an event, such as fire, theft, or flooding. Insurance refers to coverage over a limited time. In other words, IF something happens which causes you loss, the insurer will pay you for them loss as stated in the policy.

Assurance provides coverage for events that will occur, such as death. … Assurance refers to persistent coverage over extended periods or until death. WHEN something happens payment is made.

When we consider these terms in relation to our walk with Christ we discover Christ provides both!

We do not know what challenges may come to us in our journey of faith… Perhaps prolonged sickness, perhaps great financial loss, perhaps seasons requiring great endurance or perseverance of faith, perhaps times where words must be carefully measured and where great wisdom is required… Scripture promises us that in all things Christ will prove Himself sufficient.

If God is for us, who can be against us?” Paul asks rhetorically (Rom. 8:31).

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8:35, 37-39)

Another time Paul testified, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” (Phil. 4:12-13). Whatever unforeseen circumstances we experience, Christ will be right there with us in the midst of them, giving strength, whispering wisdom, prompting hope, and providing for our needs.

Best of all Christ will be there as well at the inevitable end of the believer’s pilgrimage, for surely every one of us will die. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). His Presence then is assured. It’s in the “Policy”…

“For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our Guide even to the end.” (Ps. 48:14).

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me;” (Ps. 23:4).

The better Insurance/Assurance policies can be costly, but Christ’s offer is free! As the hymn celebrates,

“Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside”
