God’s Good Design
The 1994 film “Junior” stars Austrian-American Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dr. Alex Hesse, a male research geneticist, who along with his partner Dr. Larry Arbogast (Danny DeVito) are working on a drug which will help women conceive a baby. When a rushed experiment goes wrong it is Hesse who accidentally becomes pregnant!
There have been several “pregnant men” flicks over the years. The 1973 French-Italian film “A Slightly Pregnant Man” has driving instructor Marco suddenly find himself 4 months pregnant. Billy Crystal becomes pregnant in the Joan Rivers 1978 film “Rabbit Test.” An episode of “Sliders” (1995-2000) has time travelers arrive in a world where women are unable to carry children to term. Men are given an artificial womb and carry the child through the third trimester to birth. In “Star Trek: Enterprise: Unexpected” Commander Trip Tucker accidentally becomes “pregnant” after playing a game with an unknown alien species.
I don’t believe I’ve watched any of these movies or TV episodes. There’s just immediately something repulsive to me about the premise. Not so at all when a pregnant woman is contemplated. An interesting fact, isn’t it. We sometimes just know innately how God has constructed certain things to be… what is natural, as God intended, and what is not.
From the beginning God ordained – and honoured—women with this special endowment. Before the first birth Adam knew something of this female power. As scripture tells us “Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.” (Gen. 3:20). “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man,” she said. (Gen. 4:1). And most every woman since has been privileged to join her in that succession.
What very special blessings indeed are ours when we live according to God’s good design.
