Jesus loves the “little” things…

The gospels recount at least two incidents of a woman anointing Jesus’ head or feet. Some say there may possibly have been three such events. There were most certainly two: one by an unnamed woman in Bethany at the home of Simon the Leper (Matt. 26:6-13: Mark 14:2-9), and one by a known sinful woman at the home of a Pharisee (Luke 7:36-50). John records a possible third anointing by Mary, also in Bethany at the home of Lazarus (John 12:1-7).

Matthew and Mark most certainly speak of the same occurrence. Both mention the home of Simon the Leper, the alabaster box, the perfume’s great expense, the indignation of the disciples at the perceived waste, and Jesus rebuttal saying the woman did this “beautiful thing” in preparation for His burial to come. He then adds, “Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Jesus, it seems, values the telling of what others may deem the “little” stories… the “two-mite” stories… the everyday stories we all experience yet often deem too insignificant to tell. But Christ loves confounding the wise and mighty with the wee things of mustard seeds, boy’s lunches and small stones (Matt. 13:32; John 6:9; 1 Sam. 7:14).

Paul writes,

“God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.” (1 Cor. 1:27-29).

So it is with our testimonies.

Do not think you have nothing about which to testify because your experience of coming to Christ may not be as dramatic as others’. Good people too need to hear of their need for Jesus. Do not think an incident of God working in your life is too small to share. As scripture says, we ought not think little of “the day of small things” (Zech. 4:10). Small things, so-called “mundane” things are where we all live, and Jesus meets us in our everydays.

The sorts of stories Jesus wants told and preserved are just such seeming small ones… He said, “Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
