Navigating in the Fog…

Remember back at the start of 2020? Back then it seemed nearly every organization was taking advantage of the number and casting a 20:20 Vision for the year, or years, ahead. There was great optimism! Back then the winter air was crisp and pure. Minds were crisp and clear too and envisioning better things came easy. Many of us began to make our plans…

Then the fog rolled in.

COrona VIrus Disease 1919 blew in until soon it covered the globe. Even the best visionaries lost sight of their roadway and were forced to look down to gauge a baby step progress. But even that was difficult as we were uncertain which way to point our toes!

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” reminds scripture (Prov. 16:9), be they baby steps or a runner’s stride. But when the headlight “light to our path” bounces back at us, the eternal Word still surely guides as the foglight “lamp to our feet” (Ps. 119:105).

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:7). To this came Jesus’ reply, “I am the way…” (v. 8). Indeed, “Follow me…” is Jesus’ call to all those who believe.

We walk by faith not by sight,” Paul reminded the Corinthians (2 Cor. 5:7). The problem is we get used to taking cues from our sightedness. What we must learn is trust. We must hold tight to Christ and step forward as He leads. He will not lead us into the ditch. He invites us to take upon ourselves His yoke… round our neck… and His. When we do so it matters not that all around is fog. Our yokemate knows the way… He sees from far above. The fogginess is only here below. From above there is no fog at all.

Perhaps this COVID-19 itself is also really no fog at all! Perhaps for our spirits it is as the Hebrews found, “a pillar of cloud to guide...” (Exod. 13:21)… to guide us back to blindness… back to dependency upon Him instead of our sight. If so, our job is not to ‘find a way’ at all but to stay yoked to Him, to trust He is indeed Himself the only ‘Way’ we require.
