An earthquake triggered the great Indian Ocean tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004 releasing energy equivalent to 23,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs and causing the death of over 150,000 in just one day. Before that, the Lituya Bay, Alaska tsunami of July 9, 1958 reached a record height of 1,720 feet (524.25 meters) and released some 40 million cubic yards (30.6 million cubic meters) of rock. Damage caused by the Indonesian tsunamis of 2018 and 2020 will require years of recovery – much longer if future tsunamis occur.
If you’ve seen the news footage you will immediately realize the unstoppable forces of a tsunami! Yet, to the Lord Almighty, a tsunami is nothing – “a whisper,” says Job! How is it then that puny, arrogant man can think it possible to thwart the power of God?
Suffering, bereaved, and impoverished Job knew something of the power of God. To his accusing “comforters” he summarized…
“God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. He created the horizon when he separated the waters: he set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?” (Job 26:7-14).
To the questioning Sadducees Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” (Matt. 22:29).
This past Sunday we sang,
“Who can stop the Lord Almighty?… Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah. He’s roaring with power and fighting our battles…. And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb… Oh who can stop the Lord Almighty?”
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
The question is laughable!
The Lord — our Maker — is to be bowed before… obeyed… When we do, that same unstoppable power works within us… it is mighty… “to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:4). O Lord, help Your people to obey You this day! Do wonders!
