Why such violence?

It doesn’t matter how many trappings of civilization you set up around mankind, how much technology you pile on top him, how much wealth, power, prestige you give individuals or societies, man remains the fallen mammal he became in the garden. Jeremiah cried out “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9).

Desperately wicked! Desperately means wretchedly, hopelessly, resignedly. In other words his wicked heart is beyond all hope on earth! And scripture tells us that his evil heart will only get worse and worse! In fact it says exactly that: “But evil men… shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” (2 Tim. 3:13).

Evil men (those causing pain or trouble, evil in their effect or influence, wicked, grievous, harmful or malicious) will develop – and I do mean DE-velop – in three ways:

● They will grow worse,
● They will deceive others,
● They will themselves be deceived.

Apart from Christ this world walks in utter darkness, “they believe the lie” and so are deceived. They “teach others” by mouth or deed the same lie, “deceiving others,” though they believe the lie true themselves. Oh how this breaks Creator’s heart!

Jesus was about to be betrayed, Judas had already left into the night, Peter would soon deny his Lord, many would abandon Him and that dark weekend would begin and leave His followers mystified. Jesus calls the disciples together and says,

My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:33-35).

A deathbed wish in a way, from the purest, most innocent of men, about to die for you.

How have you done with it?

20200604_163746Leonard Ravenhill has said, “The greatest miracle that God can do today is to take an unholy man out of an unholy world and make him holy, then put him back into that unholy world and keep him holy in it.”

Mankind’s heart may be beyond all hope on earth but thank God it is not beyond all hope in heaven!

Paul writes of one glorious outcome of God’s work in unholy men and women. “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:23-28).

Why such violence? Because without Christ we are wicked people, wicked people turning worse. The sooner a soul accepts this truth and surrenders to Christ the better – much MUCH better!
